SLC – Somerset West Learning Centre
Grade 9 – 12
SLC follows the CAPS curriculum provided by Optimi (Impaq), a leader in the field of education in South Africa.
Learners supported by SLC obtain the Umalusi NSC (Matric) certificate, the same as learners from any other main stream government school. This enables them to study at a university or tertiary institution of their choice.
SLC offers a wide variety of subject choices. Tutoring and online support take place in both English as well as Afrikaans. Visit www.impaq.co.za to view the subject choices offered.
The ratio of tutors to learners in this phase is 1:10. Our tutors are subject specialized and combine their skills with those of the subjects specialists at Optimi (Impaq). We offer one-on-one support as needed.
Students are trained to work effectively on the Optimi (Impaq) OLP (online learning portal) , providing them with the excellent structure of a detailed planning system, specialized subject support visual lessons, guidance sessions and progress tracking.
This system creates the opportunity for flexibility and an individulized study approach.
In the FET Phase it is expected of a learner to be able to work independently, to utilize the expertise of the qualified subject tutors and have the confidence to ask for support and get one-on-one specialized help.
Progress is monitored on a continuous basis to ensure that learners are coping.
All formal assessments are done as prescribed by CAPS and SACAI in the FET phase, but the calm environment creates the opportunity to reduce stress and anxiety.
All exams are written at SLC, right up to the Grade 12 Prelim exam. The final Grade 12 exam will be written at a venue as prescribed by SACAI, the examination body regulating distance education registered with Umalusi.
Our highest priority is not only the academic support, but also the emotional support of our learners.
Which Grade 9 – 12 learners will benefit from the SLC approach?
Learners who:
- are academically strong but need a more flexible approach
- feel more comfortable in small groups
- struggle with the pace and pressure of main stream classes
- are prone to anxiety
- do professional sport and need more flexibility
- need support in time of trauma or illness who want to integrate back into the main stream system when circumstances improve.
