SLC – Somerset West Learning Centre
Grade 4 – 8
Grade 4 – 8 learners are tutored in small groups of between 4 – 10 learners per grade, under the supervision of one dedicated fully qualified educator, following the CAPS curriculum, provided by Optimi (Impaq).
This enables any learner to integrate back into the main stream system with ease, should the need arise.
Tutoring takes place in both English as well as Afrikaans, depending on the need of the learner within the small group.
Learners have an allocated space and do not change classes, minimizing noise and disruption.
The fact that one educator is responsible for a small group, allows the educator flexibility to set the pace and make adjustments to the daily schedule, creating the opportunity to focus more on both the academic as well as emotional needs of individual learners.
More time can be spent on important content which the learners need to understand, in stead of working at a pace where many learners feel lost.
Our learning environment is flexible yet structured, calm yet focussed, geared towards academic success, yet without the fast pace and pressure of bigger institutions.
Open communication with parents takes place on a continuous and personal level.
All formal assessments are done as prescribed by CAPS, but the calm environment creates an opportunity to reduce stress and anxiety.
Which Grade 4 – 8 learners will benefit from the SLC approach?
Learners who:
- are academically strong but need a more flexible approach
- feel more comfortable in small groups
- struggle with the pace and pressure of main stream classes
- are prone to anxiety
- do professional sport and need more flexibility
- need support in time of trauma or illness who want to integrate back into the main stream system when circumstances improve.
