SLC – Somerset West Learning Centre
Grade 1 – 3
Learners are tutored by an experienced and fully qualified Foundation Phase tutor, in a group of maximum 5 learners. Strong emphasis is placed on building strong basic blocks with regard to Reading, Writing and Mathematics, following the CAPS curriculum provided by Optimi (Impaq). www.impaq.co.za
This enables the learner easily to integrate back into the main stream system should the need be there.
Tutoring takes place in both English as well as Afrikaans, depending on the need of the learner within the small group.
The development of strong social and emotional skills is always integrated into the learning process.
We are small enough to have a specialized approach, yet big enough for learners to have more than enough friends to play with and develop important life skills.
Our learning environment is flexible yet structured, calm yet focussed, geared towards academic success, yet without the fast pace and pressure of bigger institutions.
Open communication with parents takes place on a continuous and personal level.
Which Grade 1 – 3 learners will benefit from the SLC approach?
Learners who:
- are academically strong but need a more flexible approach
- feel more comfortable in small groups
- struggle with the pace and pressure of main stream classes
- are prone to anxiety
- do professional sport and need more flexibility
- need support in time of trauma or illness who want to integrate back into the main stream system when circumstances improve.
